What thymalfasin is
The short answer: thymosin alpha-1 belongs to the peptides, which are short chains made from protein building blocks. Its man-made form is used as a medicine in some countries. The name alone does not tell us whether it will help you.
Peptides consist of protein building blocks joined in small chains. The name describes their shape; it does not tell us what a treatment can do.
Thymosin alpha-1 was first found in a chest gland called the thymus, which helps the body’s defences develop. Those defences are called the immune system. Its man-made form is called thymalfasin.
What is known
Researchers think it changes how some cells in the body’s defences work. Its effects in people are still not fully understood.
A change in those cells does not prove that people feel better or live longer. In its 2024 review, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which oversees US drugs, could not tell from the studies whether it helped with the health problems reviewed.
