Approval and evidence
The FDA’s review
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which oversees US drugs, reviewed thymosin alpha-1 in December 2024. Its review describes the substance, what the studies found and concerns about the quality of the ingredient.
On the page from the FDA, current as of April 22, 2026, thymosin alpha-1 appears among requests to allow an ingredient that were taken back. Its safety concerns are still printed there.
In compounding, a medicine is made or changed to suit one patient. The December 4, 2024 meeting record shows votes against adding two chemical forms, thymosin alpha-1 free base and thymosin alpha-1 acetate, to the ingredient list for ordinary compounding pharmacies. These were votes giving advice to the FDA, rather than changing the law.
The 2025 TESTS report found no clear reduction in deaths from sepsis, a dangerous reaction to infection. The study named SciClone Pharmaceuticals, the maker of thymalfasin (Zadaxin), as a supporter. Some authors also received grants or fees from the company.
The source record available to this guide does not say whether the company’s help for the study was money, medicine or something else.
Research across trials
A review that combined sepsis studies
A 2025 review combined results from sepsis trials and found fewer deaths overall. When the authors looked only at trials they rated as higher quality, they could no longer be sure the medicine reduced deaths. They also found no clear reduction when looking only at trials held at several hospitals.
Some researchers who worked on TESTS also wrote the review. The reports therefore share some researchers, rather than giving checks by wholly separate teams.
The source record does not explain how the review rated trial quality. Sharing researchers does not by itself show that a result is right or wrong. Ask how the review checked the studies.
Checking care
Where to find a doctor’s licence record
Doctors are licensed by the medical boards in their states. They publish licence information, with detail varying by state. The Federation of State Medical Boards brings these bodies together and offers a directory that links to their own websites.
The US approval and ingredient records used here were checked on September 28, 2026. General legal and cost records were checked on September 26, 2026.
A dated record is a view at that time. Ask for the current document when a care offer relies on a rule or approval claim.
